The
lover story
The concerto deals with a love story that supposed to have happened during the fourth
century in southern China. It tells the adventures of a young lady Chuk Ying Toi send to
school, by her parents, dressed like a man. School was then forbidden to females. Ying Toi
felt for one of her classmates Leung Shan Pak. He was from a modest family and he ignored
Ying Toi true identity. One day, Ying Toi fathers decided to have her back and have her
married to a rich notable. Leung Shan Pak died from sadness. Ying Toi rushed to his grave
to pay her respect to her lover. She is said to have cried so much that the Heavens took
pity on the couple. The grave was then wide open to allow Ying Toi & Shan Pak to meet
again. They eventually reincarnated into butterflies to fly amongst flowers forever!
Concerto
The concerto was composed by Gang Chen & Tan Hao He in 1958. It was divided into three
parts:
- Falling in love
- Refusing the weeding
- Metamorphosis
The first part deals with the encounter of Yin Toi and Shan
Pak and the time spent studying together. The second part relates the opposition between
Yin Toi and her fathers who want to have her married, and the death of both lovers. The
last part depicts the reincarnation of the lovers into butterflies.
Here are two versions of the Concerto, pretty available everywhere.

Music score from Tsui Hark movie: The Lovers
The Lovers (1994) is one of the most romantic movies from HK. The
soundtrack is wonderful as often in Tsui Hark's films and stresses the peotic charm of
every single frame of the movie. The main theme here is a modern version of a very
popular opera.
