The legend of the Butterfly Lovers Chuk Yin Toi & Leung Shan Pak has inspired a concerto for violin and has become through the years one of the most popular Chinese melody. The Butterfly Lovers myth is overall known in the West for its big screen adaptation by Tsui Hark with The Lovers in 1994 starring Charlie Young and Nicky Wu. Director Li Hanxiang has, however, already brought this story to theatres in the sixties.

The lover story
The concerto deals with a love story that supposed to have happened during the fourth century in southern China. It tells the adventures of a young lady Chuk Ying Toi send to school, by her parents, dressed like a man. School was then forbidden to females. Ying Toi felt for one of her classmates Leung Shan Pak. He was from a modest family and he ignored Ying Toi true identity. One day, Ying Toi fathers decided to have her back and have her married to a rich notable. Leung Shan Pak died from sadness. Ying Toi rushed to his grave to pay her respect to her lover. She is said to have cried so much that the Heavens took pity on the couple. Concerto
The concerto was composed by Gang Chen & Tan Hao He in 1958. It was divided into three parts:

- Falling in love
- Refusing the weeding
- Metamorphosis

The first part deals with the encounter of Yin Toi and Shan Pak and the time spent studying together. The second part relates the opposition between Yin Toi and her fathers who want to have her married, and the death of both lovers. The last part depicts the reincarnation of the lovers into butterflies.

Here are two versions of the Concerto, pretty available everywhere.
